Additives for rigid and flexible profiles in construction

Additives for PVC in profiles — window profiles, doors and windows, seals and technical parts

Under the umbrella term "profiles" coexist products that bear little resemblance to one another. Rigid profiles—windows, doors, edge banding, moldings—compete for line speed and for maintaining their color and whiteness after years of sun and rain. Flexible profiles—seals, gaskets, bathroom and drainage fixtures, hoses—rely on flexibility and, in many cases, on preventing mold growth due to humidity. Each product family requires its own specific set of additives.

Our portfolio for this industry includes additives for rigid profiles (rigid stabilizers, MBS and CPE impact modifiers, UV absorbers, phosphite antioxidant, waxes and processing aids) and for flexible profiles (plasticizers, flexible stabilizers, epoxidizing and lubricants), in partial batches.

We work with profile extruders that require batch-to-batch reproducibility and immediate backup when your regular supplier changes specifications without notice. We deliver in smaller quantities or full container loads at preferential pricing, depending on your operation.

Sub-applications within the profiles

The profiles are divided into two main families, both central to construction:

Rigid profiles

Window profiles and frames

It uses a resin with a higher K-value (higher molecular weight) than that of the siding, which is more difficult to fuse, and compensates with an additive package designed to maintain line speed. The output, however, is determined by the apparent density of the mix and the filler level of the formula.

Edge trims and moldings

Decorative and finishing profiles (semi-flexible versions are also available).

Color profiles vs. opaque/matte

The type of impact modifier changes depending on whether you are looking for a bright, vibrant color or a matte finish; our lubricants also help to enhance the shine.

Elements exposed to the elements

Gutters, tiles and panels: require UV, antioxidant and antimicrobial protection.

rigid foamed profile

Thick-section windows and profiles produced with a cellular structure to lower the cost per piece and improve acoustic performance. This requires a foaming agent, its activator, and a system to maintain a uniform cell structure.

Flexible profiles

Window seals and weatherstripping

Our plasticizers, flexible stabilizers, epoxidizing agents, and lubricants provide the flexibility and property retention required by window seals and gaskets.

Flexible packaging and injection-molded “O-ring” type parts”

Technical seals that require flexibility and good recovery.

Strainer covers, drain covers and sink traps

Parts in contact with moisture where antifungal properties are sought to prevent bad odors and mold, these properties are obtained by incorporating zinc pyrithione into the formulation.

Dust catcher

Flexible sealing profile for doors and windows.

Hose for transporting water and irrigation

With FDA-approved additives for contact with water. In hose. co-extruded, The most important thing is to withstand high water pressure and rough handling: the section helical It needs sufficient impact resistance to prevent leakage when stepped on, driven over, or stored in a warehouse.

For flexible profiles, medium or high molecular weight resins are used (due to their good plasticizer absorption), with DOP/DOTP, epoxidized, and lubricants. For water hose, FDA-approved grades and an impact modifier (CPE) are selected in the helical structure.

Process aids

Function in formulationChemical Additives ProductsSpecific application
Process aid (rigid extrusion)PA-912 (REACH SVHC), AID-LP 175They promote gelation and melt strength, improve flow and output, prevent melt cracking, regulate die swell, and widen the process window; vital in rigid profiles. They are not lubricants: they perform the opposite function.

Foam (rigid profile)

Function in formulationChemical Additives ProductsSpecific application
foaming agentAC-7000Rigid PVC foam in thick-section windows and profiles: reduces the cost per piece and provides acoustic performance. Its fine particle size (3–5 microns) forms a uniform, crack-free cell.
Activator (kicker)LOX-0180It lowers the activation temperature of the foaming agent and makes its use more efficient: the same density is achieved with a smaller dose of foaming agent.
High molecular weight process aidPA 970Necessary for foaming rigid profiles: maintains melt strength and stabilizes cell structure
Optical brightenerOptical brightenerIn a rigid white profile, calcium carbonate tends to yellow the piece. The right combination of titanium dioxide and optical brightener corrects this yellowing and produces a visibly whiter profile.

In rigid profile foaming, the processing aid plays a role as crucial as the foaming agent itself: it maintains melt strength and stabilizes the gas cells, allowing for lower densities with a uniform cell structure. Without this support, the cells collapse or open up, and the profile loses both the cost savings and the acoustic performance that were desired. Therefore, the foaming agent is formulated as a system—foaming agent, activator, and processing aid—and not as an isolated additive.

Common problems with PVC profiles and how to fix them

Loss of brightness or color in color profile.

An unsuitable impact modifier dulls the color. Recommendation: The correct impact modifier depends on whether the profile is colored/crystal or opaque/matte; our lubricants also support gloss. We'll guide you on the system for your finish.

Yellowing when exposed to the elements.

Benzophenone-type UV absorbers may turn yellow when zinc chloride (from the mixed stabilizers) is present. Recommendation: Combine the UV absorber with antioxidant and phosphite to maintain the color; tin mercaptan stabilizers, which have low lightfastness, should be reinforced with these additives. We'll help you define the system.

Line speed and output profile.

The output of the line depends primarily on the apparent density of the mixture —bulk density—: the more mass the spindle carries per revolution, the more kilograms per hour come out of the die. The K value The resin's properties also influence something else: a higher K value (higher molecular weight) makes the resin more difficult to fuse, even though it provides better mechanical properties. And the burden which is added to the formula modifies the apparent density and, with it, the output of the profile. Recommendation: When changing resins or adjusting the loading level, the entire package must be checked; our process aids allow you to lower the melting temperature, reduce downtime, and improve output. Contact us to optimize your line.

Flexible window profile that deforms upon cooling and winding.

Recommendation: It usually requires adjusting the extrusion temperature to lower the dough temperature and reinforcing it with special lubricants; it's also advisable to check the cooling tank. We'll help you determine the adjustment.

Leaks in co-extruded water or irrigation hose.

If the correct fusion is not achieved or there is insufficient impact resistance in the co-extrusion, the hose leaks —typically when stepped on, when a vehicle drives over it, or when it is stored in a warehouse—. Recommendation: We work on the fusion and reinforce the impact resistance of the helical section; we help you define the system (including grades with FDA approval for water).

Irregular surface or melt fracture that does not improve with increased lubricant.

Recommendation: If the problem stems from a lack of cohesion/melt strength, the solution is a process aid, not more lubricant (which pushes in the opposite direction). We'll help you determine which one you're lacking.

The impact does not increase even if you add more modifier.

Recommendation: The impact depends not only on the dosage, but also on the degree of gelation, the melt temperature, and the resin; it's advisable to review the entire process, not just the pH. Contact us for a diagnosis.

Rigid white profile that turns yellowish.

Calcium carbonate, at the typical load levels of the rigid profile, tends to shift the profile's tone towards yellow. Increasing the titanium dioxide alone does not correct this: it increases opacity, but does not eliminate the yellow tint. RecommendationThe whiteness is restored with the correct balance between titanium dioxide and optical brightener. We help you determine the right balance for your load level.
