A cable is unforgiving: the insulation must retain its electrical properties after aging, resist flames, and emerge from the die without a single surface defect, running at hundreds of meters per minute. The type of PVC resin, the stabilizer, the plasticizer, and the lubricant determine whether the cable meets the standard—NMX-J-010 and NOM-063 in Mexico, JASO D611 for automotive cable—or whether the reel ends up rejected.

Sub-applications within cable and wire
Construction cable is one of the largest PVC markets in Mexico, comparable to the pipe market. It is governed by NMX-J-010-ANCE, a standard developed jointly by ANCE, CSA, and UL, and equivalent to ANSI/UL 83. Compliance is verified under NOM-063-SCFI, which is mandatory for manufacturing or importing conductors in the country. The fundamental purpose of this standard is to prevent the conductor from becoming a fire hazard in the event of an overload, short circuit, or overheating—and this is determined by the conductor's composition.
Building and power cable (TW, THW, THWN)
This is the bulk of the market: installation wire and cable up to 600 V for residential, commercial, and industrial use. TW operates at 60°C, and THW—the most common type used in installations—at 75°C in damp locations; THWN adds a nylon jacket. The compound must withstand tensile and elongation at break before and after aging, maintain insulation resistance after immersion in water, and not propagate flame. We supply the stabilizer, plasticizer, and lubrication package that enable the formulation to meet these requirements.
High temperature insulation (THHW, THW-2, THWN-2, THHN)
This is where the stabilizing system is most stressed, because the compound is formulated to 105 °CThese constructions typically carry multiple ratings—90°C as THWN-2 in both wet and dry conditions, and 105°C in dry conditions when classified as appliance wire—and a 105°C compound covers both services. It must retain its properties after accelerated aging in a forced-convection oven, and in types with the suffix W y -2, Maintaining insulation resistance while submerged in water at a certain temperature is crucial. This continuous operation isn't the only scenario: the conductor must also withstand overload spikes and short-circuit conditions at much higher temperatures. Here, the enemy isn't just heat, but also water absorption, which is combated by minimizing hydrophilic ingredients and choosing a low-migration plasticizer.
Automotive cable (AVSS, GPT, WTA)
This flexible, thin-walled compound is extruded at very high speeds and must pass thermal aging and ozone etching tests under industry standards such as JASO D611 and SAE J1128. Our CaZn lubricants and stabilizers achieve the right balance to sustain line speed without surface defects while also helping to pass these tests.
Communication cable, control and plugs
Insulation, jackets, flexible cords, and plugs are used where there are no severe wet electrical requirements, but there are demands for surface finish, flexibility, and line speed. Since the compound isn't packaged with a high-temperature component, the focus shifts to cost, processability, and batch-to-batch consistency—which is precisely where switching to a poorly rated supplier results in rejects.
Electrical grade harnesses
High-temperature, flame-retardant CaZn package for harnesses and sealing strips operating at 105°C. This application meets three key requirements: retention of properties after prolonged accelerated aging, flame resistance, and absence of heavy metals. Our LC-188 is formulated for this profile.
How to read the cable designation
The nomenclature follows the UL convention, harmonized in Mexico: T indicates thermoplastic PVC insulation. H operation at 75 °C · HH operation at 90 °C · W moisture resistance N nylon cover -2 Performance at 90°C dry and wet; many of these constructions also carry a 105°C dry rating as appliance wire, so the compound is formulated at the higher temperature. LS Reduced smoke and low acid gas emissions. Understanding the key allows you to anticipate what will be required of the compound: the higher the temperature and the more severe the humidity conditions, the more critical the stabilizing system and the choice of plasticizer become.

Common problems with PVC cable and how to fix them
High-speed surface defect (stick-slip / cast fracture).
In high-speed insulation extrusion, the melt alternates between sticking and slipping on the die wall, producing a rough, "sharkskin" surface. Recommendation: The solution is to adjust the lubrication balance and reduce the melt viscosity. The fine-tuning depends on your production line—we can help you define it.
Wet insulation resistance drop at 90°C.
The enemy is water absorption. Recommendation: minimize hydrophilic ingredients, use a low-migration trimellitate (TOTM) plasticizer, and an appropriate CaZn system (LC-188).
Migration or volatility of the plasticizer at high temperature.
Recommendation: Trimellitates (TOTM) are the state of the art in high-temperature insulation due to their low volatility and migration.
