Additives for the PVC food packaging and film industry

In the food film industry, the customer judges with their eyes before relying on the certificate: if the wrapper fogs up or comes out cloudy, the product won't sell. And behind that appearance lies a record to be kept—FDA and the Mexican standards applicable — because every additive ends up in contact with what someone is going to eat.

At Chemical Additives, we maintain a national warehouse of food packaging additives: FDA tin stabilizers (RT-198, RT-430-M, RT-435-L), octyl tin packaging/medical grade (LOX-9808L), food grade CaZn (MW-11), antifog (MOG and TW-80), DOTP plasticizer (FDA) and FDA waxes, in partial batches.

Sub-applications within food packaging

Food film (cling film)

Wrapping for fruit, vegetables, and meat, where the product is sold based on what is visible through the film. It requires high transparency, no gels, and an anti-fog coating to prevent food vapor from condensing into droplets and clouding the packaging. The entire system is subject to food contact scrutiny.

Bottle and rigid transparent sheet

Blow molding, injection molding, and calendering of rigid transparent materials, where clarity depends on complete melting and the stabilizer must be low-odor to avoid transferring any odor to the packaged product. The impact modifier prevents the part from fracturing during filling, transport, and handling.

Pharmaceutical blisters

Rigid, transparent film for primary drug packaging, the most regulated application in the portfolio. It requires a clean stabilizing system, batch traceability, and compliance documentation for the manufacturer's dossier.

Seals for wreaths and jars

Flexible part in direct contact with food or beverage. Our food-grade stabilizers, plasticizers, and epoxidation provide the flexibility and color stability the part requires without compromising compliance.

Heat-shrinkable tamper-evident band and seal

Wrap-around label and tamper-evident seal for bottles, containers, and gas tanks, produced by extrusion of heat-shrink film. They are formulated with a medium-to-high K-value suspension resin and low gel content, with some impact resistance to prevent tearing during application and handling, and with processing aids to maintain the transparency and gloss required for a printed label.

In rigid transparent films, the reference system is methyl tin, due to its thermal stability against carbonization and yellowing defects. Calcium zinc powder systems are reserved for flexible films.

Common problems in food packaging and how to fix them

Murky film (lack of transparency).

Clarity comes from good fusion. Recommendation: promote fusion (resin and processing aid), avoid antistatic calcium stearate on the surface, and ensure the resin dries properly to prevent dark particles from forming.

Film fogging.

Water vapor condenses into droplets that cause fogging. Recommendation: Apply an anti-fog coating (MOG, TW-80) that migrates to the surface.

Gels in the film.

Recommendation: Use low gel level (film-grade) resin with higher porosity for better fusion.

The packaging transfers odor to the product.

When in contact with food, any residual odor of the compound is noticeable in the packaged product. The temptation is to replace the tin stabilizer with a powdered calcium-zinc, which doesn't impart any odor—but in rigid, transparent packaging, this substitution is costly: powdered CaZn doesn't achieve the thermal stability of methyltin, and carbon spots and yellowing due to degradation appear, which are unacceptable in a transparent piece. RecommendationFor rigid, transparent applications, the best option is low-odor methyl tin—manufacturers have worked hard to reduce odor, and any residual smell dissipates over time—along with a processing system that prevents overheating the compound.
