PVC additives in toys

PVC additives for toys — free from restricted phthalates and alkylphenols

In the toy industry, the laboratory decides before the buyer. A PVC toy is evaluated based on what can migrate from the material when a child bites, sucks, or handles it for hours, and just one poorly chosen additive—a plasticizer, a stabilizer, a lubricant—can cause the entire batch to fail. That's why the compound is built from compliance backward.

From our warehouse in Mexico we supply toy additives that comply with: DOTP plasticizer (EN 71-3), alkylphenol-free stabilizers (MW-33, MW-11, LOX-4M-40) and lubricants EN 71-3 (MEG-40, MOG, Adilub LPS), in partial lots.

We work with manufacturers who need compliance documentation to export or sell to chains that require it. We deliver in smaller quantities or by full container load at preferential rates.

Sub-applications within the toy

Inflatable toys: balls, floats and pool

Hollow pieces produced by rotational molding from plastisol, where the paste must flow and gel evenly to achieve a uniform thickness without weak points. Because this product is used in water and stored moist, mold and staining are frequent consumer complaints.

Molded toys: dolls and figures

Casting is done with low-viscosity plastisol, which must replicate the details of the mold and demold without deformation. The initial color and its retention over time are essential to the product: a doll that yellows on the shelf won't sell.

Children's soles and footwear

The flexible part is subject to the same scrutiny as the toy, because the child handles it and puts it in their mouth. When the sole is foamed, the foaming system defines the density and uniformity of the cell.

Teethers and teething products

The most demanding application in the industry: direct and prolonged contact with the child's mouth. Here, the criterion is to reduce the system to the essentials and choose each component based on its migration profile, not its process performance.

Toy safety standards—EN 71-3 in Europe, CPSIA and ASTM F963 in the United States, and applicable Mexican regulations—are verified on the finished toy, not the additive. We provide additives with the appropriate profile to formulate a compliant compound, along with the manufacturer's documentation for inclusion in your file.

The regulatory framework for toys in Mexico and in export markets

In Mexico, toys intended for children up to 12 years of age are regulated by NOM-252-SSA1-2011, Environmental Health. Toys and School Supplies. Bioavailability Limits of Heavy Metals, published in 2012 and mandatory for anyone who manufactures, imports, or sells toys in the country. It establishes bioavailability limits and testing methods for lead, antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, mercury, and selenium. Importantly for manufacturers, it covers not only coatings but also the base material of the toy, including polymers. It replaced the previous NOM-015/1-SCFI/SSA-1994.

For export, the framework changes. EN 71-3 is the European standard and the one most requested by retail chains; in the United States, they apply CPSIA and ASTM F963.

In all cases, the verification is done on the finished toy. Our role is to provide additives with the appropriate profile so that your compound passes these tests, and to deliver the manufacturer's documentation for your records.

Common problems with PVC toys and how to fix them

Fail EN 71-3 / restricted phthalates.

Recommendation: Build the compound on DOTP (EN 71-3) and avoid restricted phthalates; in biters, the cleanest system (DOTP + MW-33 + lubricants EN 71-3).

Stabilizer with alkylphenols.

Recommendation: use alkylphenol-free stabilizers (MW-33, MW-11).

Wrist slush/rotational ball defects.

Recommendation: low viscosity plastisol (LOX-4M-40) and suitable melt plasticizer.

The bath or pool toy develops mold.

Hollow pieces retain water inside and are stored damp, ideal conditions for mold growth that consumers immediately notice, resulting in returns. Recommendation: The problem is addressed at the formulation stage by incorporating a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent into the piece. Contact us to determine the dosage.
